In another post, Wayne (Logres) said that if you hear increased humming from your fuel pump, it's on it's way out.

Dave (Sleeper) said that if the pump fails you can get it to run temporarily by banging on the fuel tank (not a quote).

I noticed my fuel pump humming louder than normal the other day. I was concerned that it was the pump. Today when I went to pay my water bill, the car wouldn't start. When I keyed on, I heard no humming at all.

I gave the fuel tank some good whacks with my fist. I keyed on, and heard the pump humming. Then I started it right up. I drove it home and parked in the driveway. I've got the exhaust off and I'll have the tank out tomorrow.:)

Thanks guys for saving my car from the "Wrecker"!

I love it when the "old tricks" work.

A little percussive maintenance, selectively applied, really can get you a long way.

For a while I had problems with the fuel pump(s) in my Blazer. Ended up in the end being crappy contacts (had to bend the contacts to get good, uh, contact) but I had to use the hammer technique for a while. Whenever the truck wouldn't start, i'd hit the remote starter and while it was cranking, i'd get under the back of the truck and go to town on the tank with a hammer. Worked every time, until I got around to cutting a hole in the floorboard and dealing with the fuel pump. Ended up on the 3rd or 4th pump before I figured out it was the contacts. Good thing it had a lifetime warranty.

I'm not sure what pump I'll use yet.

I'm not looking to spend a lot and I just need the stock flow rate.

You should consider a Walbro 190LPH, it flows just a bit more than stock, costs way less and is not very loud.

I installed the new pump yesterday. I also installed a newer tank and fuel pump/sender assembly.

I noticed that the metal shield of the tank was pretty rusty last year when I changed my transmission. I bought a good used tank then but I didn't want to install it until I had to replace the pump.

The metal shield was pretty much disentegrated, and fell off when I removed the tank.

Here's some photos of the old one and the new one.

Thanks again guys, and thanks again to Jeremi who brought me the newer pump/sender assembly and helped me put the new pump into it.

Here's the photos, caution to any southern members that don't know what rust looks like, these photos are very graphic in nature.

Now get your azz over here to help me put the truck together. I bought a whole tank last night for $25. LOL.

Hey! That looks like my gas tank shield from the '93! :eek-large:

Where'd ya get the newer one?

I got the tank from Jamie in Florida. He parts out Mark VIII's. Here's his info:

Tell him billcu sent you.:)

Jeremi, I had to get 2 new bolts for my exhaust. I'll slap it on and stop by.

We had to trim some of the metal off of the lower part of the fuel pump bracket with a Dremel cut off wheel. The wire plugged right in.
